The Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s oldest and largest journalism organization, seeks a versatile, results-oriented professional to join our team. We are hiring a Director of Finance and Administration to execute all of the organization’s and accounting and human resources functions. We seek a financial expert with high integrity and the ability to have fun and function in a diverse and dynamic work environment. He/she will be a member of the senior management team. The Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for regular accounting functions of the Society of Professional Journalists (501c6), the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation (501c3) and SPJ’s accounting clients. (S)he will ensure GAAP compliance and continue to build and manage effective and streamlined administrative/financial systems, including legal and human resources.

Reconciling bank, investment and balance sheet accounts.
Preparing and analyzing internal reports (cash and accrual) for staff and volunteers on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
Assisting with creating and inputting annual budgets.
Managing grants in cooperation with the Director of Development.
Preparing and entering month- and quarter-end journal entries.
Ensure all restricted funds are used for intended purpose.
Tracking of restricted fund balances.
Creating and/or updating written accounting procedures.
Preparing materials for annual audit and 990 filing (done by third party).
Manage relationships with financial clients.
Onboarding new finance clients, including but not limited to: Determining accounting procedures and setting up new companies in Quickbooks.
Assisting with: Client financial or payroll tax issues, 5500s, state and annual sales and use tax forms, insurance audits.
Serve as a business partner to the Executive Director on the organization’s financial, budgeting, and administrative processes—including HR, payroll, and benefits functions—with an eye to continuously develop and improve systems.
As necessary, will also supervise and assist bookkeeper with:
Processing all incoming cash receipts.
Input and maintenance of financial data (including dues, meetings, giving, and purchasing). Ensuring that financial data is entered into membership management software and accounting software and is without error.
Generating out-going payments to vendors and chapters.
The maintenance of all personnel and payroll records.
Managing the Society’s benefits plans, including health and 401k.
Financial record retention.
Other duties as assigned.
